Facebook Announces Tor Support For Its Android App

Facebook has announced that it will be rolling out Tor support for its Android app, giving users an easier way to encrypt their Facebook use while they’re on the go.

The company has been allowing users to encrypt their Facebook use through Tor on desktop for a while now, but this marks the first time the company has officially supported Tor on mobile.

“We commonly receive requests for additional platform support beyond the browser, and thanks to a project initiated by a summer intern at Facebook and subsequently picked up by our Protect and Care team in London, we are now offering experimental support for using Facebook over Tor via the Orbot proxy app for Android devices,” said the company in a blog post.

Users who want to access the Facebook app through Tor will first need to install Orbot, after which, they can head to the Facebook app and select the “Use Tor via Orbot” option. This will connect the user to Facebook through the Tor service, masking the user’s IP address and preventing their Internet service from seeing what they’re doing when they’re doing it. Potentially, this could even help users connect to Facebook in countries where the social media network is blocked.

While Facebook is also about social sharing, users should always be careful of what kinds of information they share with people they don’t necessarily want to see that information. Accessing through Tor will help users have more control over the kinds of information they share with their Internet service provider.
