Unique Reason Why Tecno are doing better than Samsung and Nokia .
For those Samsung Galaxy and Lumia die-hards you are probably saying to yourselves, ‘What is this fool on about?’. Well speaking as a former Nokia die-hard and with my experience with the Galaxy phones, I can honestly say that I have discovered the ‘holy grail’ in Tecno.
And if you compare the three companies’ latest flag-ship phones, you will understand where I’m coming from. That is the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Nokia Lumia 1320 and the new Tecno Phantom Z.
First lets start with the Lumia 1320, the smartphone which according to Microsoft East Africa General Manager will compete with the Galaxy S5………..
The almost 7 inch (6.4Inches) Lumia 132 operates 2G, 3G and 4G networks having a very minute 5MP rear camera and won’t perform nor have better looking graphics compared to the S5 or Phantom (for you thats generally because it has a 720pixel screen, and only 1GB of RAM and has only two cores). oh! Plus I am deeply disappointed that it still isn’t operating on Android. The only thing that will impress you most about this phone other than its great size is it long lasting battery (3400mAh) that could probably last you a week on stand-by. Even more disappointing is .37,999 price tag.
Other features of the Lumia 1320 include a disappointing dual-core processor, that is as slow as a tortoise to the likes of the S5 and Phantom Z. On a positive note though, you will have a 64GB microSD card that will be realy hard to fill up (really it will be hard to fill up because there aren’t as many interesting Windows apps out there).
The Samsung Galaxy S5 clearly has more to offer with its huge 16MP rear camera (but a very small 2.1MP front camera). Like its name S5, this phone has a 5.1 Inch screen of the highest quality in the bunch (1080p) you could probably watch a movie better with this phone than on most TV’s. Its eight cores (1.9GHz) and 2GB RAM will make you feel like you have a super computer on your palms. This Galaxy S5 accepts microSD cards of upto 128GB, in translation a whole lot of space for your pictures, videos, movies and apps. Unlike the Lumia the S5 operates on the Android 4.4.2 so this means you won’t have as much trouble finding apps for your phone than if you had a Windows Phone.
The disappointing bit with the S5 however is that you won’t have as much time with your apps with is very little battery capacity (2800 mAh) and you will pay a whooping Ksh.64,999 without inclusion of the Gear Fit smartwatch and as much as Ksh.74,999 to get the gear.
Now for the underdog of the lot, the Tecno Phantom Z. For what it lacks in 4G network capability, the Phantom Z makes up in dual-sim capability (and 4G would probably take up too much of your airtime so you probably won’t feel the pain). It is bigger than the S5 (5.2 Inches to be exact) and slightly less picture/video quality than the S5 (however you still will be able to enjoy high quality 1080p videos). It is considerably faster than the S5 with a 2GHz Octa-core (eight cores) processor, translation the Galaxy is superman and the Tecno is flash, and we all know who’s faster (just to be sure, its flash).
The Phantom Z has a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera, you will probably enjoy video call more with this than you will with the other two, and while you are at it the selfies will be supreme. It operates on the Android 4.4.2 and like the S5 you will enjoy many apps but much longer compared because of its considerably higher battery capacity (3080mAh). The one thing that disappoints me however is that this phone has no memory card (microSD) slot but with a 32GB internal memory you will hardly notice.
As you can see the Phantom Z is alsmost as good as the S5, but, and here is the punchline, you will pay just Ksh.36,999 for this phone and that puts a smile on anyone’s face.
So all those that still put Tecno on th ‘China-phone’ category, you might want to change your mind beccause Tecno are now playing with the ‘big-boys’.
